Why this rating?

7.2 / 10Worth it with conditions

The Flip Fish is a long-running favourite: Good Housekeeping names it a top infant-toy pick (bestseller) and its sensory-toy pick for 3-month-olds, praising the fabric tags, crinkling and squeaking parts, hidden pictures and mirror for tummy time, and Amazon.sa shoppers rate it 4.8/5 from 8,918 ratings.

WorthItMama found no CPSC recall for this toy as of Oct 23, 2026.

The score is held back by its price on Amazon.sa (close to the US$26.99 list price while US street prices are often around US$16), surface-wash-only care for a toy babies mouth, its large size, and a play window that peaks in the early months.

We did not test it ourselves; this assessment is based on the cited sources.

A good fit if

Use it for awake, supervised play only and keep it out of the cot during sleep
Surface clean it as the manufacturer directs and check seams and the mirror edge regularly
Buy if the Amazon.sa price is acceptable to you; it is a simple sensory toy rather than a multi-stage activity toy

Product strengths

Many sensory features in one soft toy: crinkly flip-up scales, hidden pictures, a squeaker tail, a mirror and fabric tags
Large, flat shape works well in front of a baby during tummy time
Usable from birth per the manufacturer, with hidden pictures that stay fun for peekaboo games later
Sold and shipped by Amazon.sa with a very high shopper rating

Before you buy

Bigger than many parents expect (just over a foot long), so it does not fit easily in a nappy bag
Manufacturer specifies surface washing only, which is less convenient for a toy babies mouth
Amazon.sa price is close to the US list price, while US street prices are often much lower
No lights or music; interest usually peaks in the first months

About the product

Overview

The Flip Fish from Melissa & Doug's K's Kids baby line (item 9195) is a large, soft fabric fish packed with sensory details. Good Housekeeping lists it among its top infant-toy picks and as its sensory-toy pick for 3-month-olds.

Key features

Flip-up fabric scales in different colours, patterns and textures that crinkle and hide pictures of sea creatures underneath.
Squeaker tail that rewards squeezing and grasping.
Baby mirror on one of the scales (described by the manufacturer as shatterproof).
Fabric tags and a textured fin to grab, pull and explore.
Hanging loop on the tail.
Size about 34 x 25 x 9.5 cm, so it sits well in front of a baby on the floor.

Who it suits

Babies from birth, per Melissa & Doug, especially during supervised tummy time from around 3 months when they start reaching and grasping.
Older babies who enjoy lifting the scales to find the hidden pictures in peekaboo-style games.
A good gift for a newborn or a baby shower.

Limitations

It is bigger than many parents expect (just over a foot long), so it does not fit easily in a small nappy bag.
It has no lights, music or modes; interest tends to peak in the early months.
The manufacturer specifies surface washing only.

Care and use

Surface wash with a damp cloth as the manufacturer directs, and let it dry fully.
Use it only for awake, supervised play; keep soft toys out of the cot during sleep.
Check the seams, scales and mirror edge regularly and stop using the toy if any part comes loose.
