About the product
Overview
Regalo's Easy Step Extra Tall (model 1166B, black) is an all-metal baby safety gate that pressure-mounts in a doorway or hallway and has a walk-through door so adults can pass without removing it.
Key features (per Regalo)
- Fits openings about 74–93 cm wide (29–31.5 in without the extension, 34–36.5 in with the included 4 in / 10 cm extension).
- Stands about 91 cm (36 in) tall, per Regalo's current product page.
- Walk-through door about 41 cm (16 in) wide with a lever handle and one-touch release safety lock.
- All-metal frame with about 5 cm (2 in) between bars.
- Includes pressure mounts, wall cups and wall-mounting hardware.
- Regalo states it is certified by the Baby Safety Alliance and meets ASTM safety standards.
Who it suits
- Children 6 to 24 months, per Regalo.
- Doorways, hallways and the bottom of stairs.
Limits before buying
- Never use at the top of stairs, per Regalo's warning.
- Wall cups must be installed or a child can push the gate out.
- The bottom threshold bar can be a trip hazard, and Wirecutter notes pressure-fit gates can loosen over time.
- The walk-through door is fairly narrow, and BabyGearLab found the Easy Step's assembly clumsy and its latch easier with two hands.
- Some Amazon listing text says 41 in tall, but Regalo and Amazon's own item dimensions give 36 in (about 91 cm); go by 91 cm.
- Measure your opening carefully before buying.
Care and use
- Install exactly as instructed with all parts, and make sure the gate rests on the floor before installing.
- Keep the gap between gate and wall under about 6 cm (2.5 in).
- Check the mounts and hardware regularly, and stop using it once your child can climb over or dislodge it.
- Always use with the lock engaged and never leave a child unattended.
- Wipes clean.
Why this rating?
A metal gate with very strong Amazon ratings (4.4/5 from over 49,000 ratings) and Baby Bargains' best-overall pick, but BabyGearLab criticised its assembly and narrow door, and Wirecutter does not recommend pressure-fit gates in general. Its Amazon.sa price is high next to other basic gates, and it is meant for 6–24 months. We have not tested it; this assessment is based on the cited sources.
