Why this rating?

Why this rating?

6.6 / 10Worth it with conditions

A popular, well-rated bedside crib: 4.6/5 from 789 Amazon ratings, named best for portability by Women's Health UK and best value by OurPick, and its predecessor scored 4.2/5 in MadeForMums testing for comfort and space.

It fits most beds with six heights and foldable feet.

Scores are held back by the tilt feature, which goes against UK safe-sleep advice to keep the surface flat, reports of wobble when it is not strapped to a bed, a basic mattress, a use window of only about six months, and an import price on Amazon.sa well above European pricing.

We have not tested it ourselves.

A good fit if

  • Keep the crib flat for sleep and do not use the tilt setting.
  • Strap it firmly to your bed with no gap, and use only the supplied mattress.
  • Check that your mattress height is between 49 and 65 cm before buying.

About the product

Overview

The Chicco Next2Me Essential is a bedside crib that straps to the side of the parents' bed so the baby sleeps in a separate space right next to you. It is the simplest, lightest model in Chicco's Next2Me range. This listing is the Stone Re_Lux colour, shipped from Amazon Germany.

Key features

  • Six height positions and foldable feet, so it lines up with parents' mattresses between about 49 and 65 cm high, including beds with storage drawers.
  • A strap system fixes the crib to the parents' bed frame; the side panel lowers for close access during night feeds and can be raised to use it as a standalone crib.
  • Two mesh windows for airflow and a clear view of the baby.
  • Mattress and travel bag included.
  • Two swivel wheels with brakes for moving it around the room.
  • Chicco states that 62% of the soft fabric is recycled polyester; the mattress cover is removable.

Who it suits

Mothers who want the baby in the same room and within arm's reach for the first months, especially during frequent night feeds or after a caesarean birth when getting in and out of bed is harder. Chicco rates it from birth to 6 months and up to 9 kg.

Limits to know

  • The crib has a tilt setting that Chicco promotes for reflux or a blocked nose, but the UK's Lullaby Trust advises keeping the sleep surface flat and not tilting the cot, so keep it level.
  • Some reviewers report it rocks or feels less stable when it is not strapped to a bed, and the feet are bulky.
  • The included mattress is basic, according to several reviews.
  • It is only used for about the first six months.
  • This imported version costs noticeably more on Amazon.sa than the same crib in Europe.

Safe use and care

Always lay your baby on their back on the flat mattress, with nothing else in the crib: no pillows, bumpers or soft toys. Use only the mattress supplied with the crib and do not add a second one. Strap the crib firmly to your bed so there is no gap and stop using it once your baby reaches 9 kg or 6 months. Remove the cover for washing as directed on the care label.
